Get out your business cards! DukeGEN is hosting its next open networking event on Wednesday, 11/30, and DukeGEN Boston is hosting at Next Jump in Cambridge. Accomplished businesswoman, philanthropist, and Duke Trustee, Laurene Sperling '78, will be special guest speaker. She will be prepared for open discussion, but will focus on topics including the power of building an engaged Board, her view of the challenges in getting to scale within social entrepreneurship, and developing a work environment/culture where creativity is fostered. The front desk phone is 617-682-4660 x5527 (if anyone gets lost and needs directions). Laurene received a B.A. in Management Science and Accounting from Duke, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She is chair of the Bell Foundation, a national leader in after-school and summer programs for children at risk. In addition, she serves on the Board of Dean's Advisors for Harvard Business School, as well as for Harvard's Graduate School of Education. Laurene also serves on the Board of New Profit, Inc., the Dana Farber Cancer Institute Women's Cancers Visiting Committee, and the Brigham and Women's Hospital Women's Health Leadership Council. She is a member of the CJP Supplemental Education Task Force and the Board of Temple Shir Tikva. A member of the Duke University Library Advisory Board from 1997 until 2010, Laurene also served as Chair from 2006 through 2010. Her prior professional experience was in corporate finance and investment banking at Paine Webber, Inc. and Cowen and Co., and accounting for Ernst & Young.
