The organization that runs the internet (ICANN) will be opening up applications for new top level domains (like .org, .com, .edu). Vancouver-based Big Room, is applying for a .eco and in doing so, aiming to represent the values of the eco/sustainability community. Their business model would require registrants to fill out an eco-profile (sort of like a LinkedIn profile), disclosing certain environmental information about their company/organization/product.
This DC consultation is part of Big Room's stakeholder engagement process which aims to gather input on the policies that will ultimately govern Dot Eco (like who is eligible for one, what information they need to disclose, etc). This engagement process includes a series of regional consultations, the next one being on November 17th here in DC.
Welcoming remarks will be provided by Bill Nitze, Oceana Energy and Julie Gorte of Pax World Funds will provide the keynote.
