Suzanne Martinson is author of " The Fallingwater Cookbook: Elsie Henderson’s Recipes and Memories," and a two-time winner of both the James Beard and Bert Greene Awards for food journalism.
“The Fallingwater Cookbook” chronicles Elsie Henderson’s adventures as the longtime (and last) cook at Fallingwater, the famous Philadelphia house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for department store mogul Edgar J. Kaufmann and his wife Liliane. Henderson worked for the Kaufmann’s for 15 years, and later for their only son, Edgar Jr.
The book intertwines Elsie’s adventures with recipes for the dishes she served for the Kaufmann family, and such notable guests as Albert Einstein, Isaac Stern, and Ted Kennedy - and even Wright, who lunched on the crab salad that now bears his name.
Martinson came to know Henderson when she was food editor for the Pittsburgh Press and later, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The resulting book of recipes and reminiscences was published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2008.
Martinson is a member of Oregon Press Women, an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women. The November 7 program is being hosted by Arizona Press Women.
