Presenting to the Board Professional Network Forum Speaker: Julie Garland McLellan Date: 5th November 2009 | Location: Canberra

Managers succeed one conversation at a time. In the workplace our most important conversations are formal presentations. These are used to gain acceptance of new strategic proposals, to make sales or to build shared understanding and common identities. The most important corporate presentations happen in the boardroom. This is where the stakes are highest and only the best will do. It is a strange and uncommon environment where protocols, behaviours and legal liabilities may be very different from those in executive life. Current government policy is driving greater interaction between the public and private sectors. This naturally leads to a greater requirement for effective presentations at board level but there is little specific information available to help be effective in this arena.

Most information on presenting is designed to help reluctant presenters to survive their ordeal. Very little is written or taught about how to excel and how to meet and surpass the expectations of highly discerning audiences. Yet that is what boardroom presenters must do.

There is also very little information available to help presenters who are unfamiliar with the boardroom to recognise, diagnose and manage the complexities of the boardroom environment. Boardroom education is designed for board members and is often too complex and legalistic for easy assimilation by practical presenters. Yet without an understanding of the boardroom and its special interpersonal dynamics, even accomplished presenters are set up to fail when they must operate in that environment. The techniques that have been practised and perfected for executive presentations may not work in the boardroom.

This presentation will provide a valuable insight into the operations of boards and the best way to present to them. It is practical and enlightening and guaranteed to provide some valuable ideas that will enhance your most important future presentations.
