The ‘capable’ director
Directorship is a delicate blend of art, science and practice. But, when a board is seeking a capable director, what does this mean? What are the skills, attributes and behaviours and where can they be found? Do Boards really know what they are looking for or do they just go through the usual process, identifying the usual skills and the usual names?
When capable people interact with groups they can find their capabilities are enhanced or diminished in the interaction. How can boards select individuals whose capabilities will be enhanced by interaction with the existing board members and avoid recruiting the otherwise brilliant candidate who becomes passive, incoherent or incapable in the boardroom.
